President's Message

A Message from Douglas F. Sawyer, President & CEO

Welcome to the New United Way of San Diego County. We call it new because over the past two years, United Way has made fundamental changes in the way it does business so that we can improve even more lives throughout our community.

We’ve changed to a Community Impact model that now has United Way focusing donor contributions on solving three of the region’s critical problems instead of scattering those gifts to more than 100 different social service agencies as we did in years past.

Here are the three areas United Way is addressing:

  • Stopping Child Abuse and Neglect

  • Promoting Financial Stability and Independence

  • Homeless Outreach and Prevention

But Community Impact is more than just focusing on specific issues. We’ve made it a priority to solve these problems, not just manage them. And to ensure that happens, we’re collaborating with the best organizations and experts in San Diego. Finally, we’ve made the measurement of results a key component so we can continually gauge our effectiveness and report our successes back to our donors.

2008 has been a year of great progress, with many programs now in place to help thousands of San Diegans from all around the county.  I invite you to explore our website to learn more about initiatives such as SafeCare, the Period of PURPLE Crying, Camp Connect West, The Plan to End Chronic Homelessness and the programs to teach adults and kids how to manage money.

There are many ways to get involved in giving, advocating or volunteering.  We hope you’ll be inspired to make a donation of either time or money to continue the important effort underway. Visit the “Ways to Give” and “Get Involved” sections of our site to learn about the many options for supporting our Community Impact work.

We encourage you to join us in the Live United movement! Take a step towards creating a better life for all of us in San Diego County.
