Almost 40% of San Diego 3rd graders aren’t reading at grade level. Children who aren’t reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are four
times more likely to drop out of high school. Without books at home during the summer months, children are behind in reading once school starts.
We must encourage children to read as early as possible. Summer marks a time when many of us recall the pleasures of getting lost in a book. But thousands of San Diego’s
low-income children won’t get a chance to continue reading over the summer without your help because they lack access to books at home.
YOU have the power to turn a book desert into a flowing oasis of reading!
