I love a fresh start! Call me an eternal optimist, but to me, there’s nothing better than a New Year’s promise to dig in and get to work.
With four months behind me as United Way’s CEO, my vision for success is starting to take root: We’re polishing the new messaging that will bring clarity to our role and meaning to our mission. Along those lines, the results of our community survey has informed the hows and whys of the ways we’ll be communicating with y’all, and that listening continues!
Next up: Our first Salon in a series, scheduled for Wednesday, January 30, hosted by Dr. Wendy Hunter at her La Jolla home. These informal settings will allow us to test our messages, get feedback on our role, and strategize about partners & sustainability.
It’s all part of the buildup to our annual breakfast—WRITE THIS DOWN!—on Wednesday, May 1, at the DoubleTree in Mission Valley. Our guest speaker, Professor of Education Dr. Pedro Noguera, will talk about the ways schools are influenced by social and economic conditions. His research underscores our current efforts, ensuring that all our children achieve the educational milestones necessary to succeed in school and life, regardless of income or zip code.
So it may seem early in the year to you, but my eyes are on the prize ahead, and I’m so excited! I can’t wait to share our role with all of you—to witness, together, how the moving parts of our community—its partners, its leaders, its supporters, its students—fit together in an amazing mosaic, in all their individual and collective beauty, working toward the future, aligned and energized for change.
How will you fit into the mosaic? Tell us about your work and your ideas to help students be successful in school and life.
Back to work! And more from me soon…
