Are you experiencing issues with your child's eating habits? Have they only wanted to eat hot dogs or chicken nuggets this past week? If you've answered yes to either of these questions and are concerned about the health and nutrition of your picky eaters, here are three tips to help alleviate mealtime stress:
1. Make sure your child's appetite is adequate. If your child isn't hungry, it's not a good idea to force him to eat, even if it's a snack. It's also not a good idea to offer bribes to your child in order to get him to finish his meals. This could lead to frustrations during mealtime, causing your child undue stress and anxiety. When it comes time to eat, offer a smaller portion size than normal and allow your child to request more. Health and nutrition isn't about forcing food but choosing the right food at the right time.
2. Follow a daily routine as closely as you can. If schedules permit, try serving meals at the same time every day. This helps your child learn what to expect and understand when it is appropriate to snack. Keep milk and juices for mealtime servings, and give your child water during and in between snacks. That way, his appetite isn't diminished from filling up on too many heavy beverages.
3. Practice patience during every meal. Let your child experiment with new foods. Sometimes he'll want to put food in his mouth and take it back out again. Other times he'll want to touch and smell the food beforehand. Make sure you introduce new foods alongside some of his favorites. Rather than focusing on how it tastes, encourage discussion about all its other qualities, like color and texture.
Be your child's advocate in learning nutritious and healthy ways to eat. Don't forget to have fun during mealtimes to help alleviate worries associated with health and nutrition for picky eaters. This goes beyond laughter and positive conversation and includes fun ways to serve and eat food.
