Governor Jerry Brown signed into law two bills that United Way of San Diego supported:
1. 2 -1 -1 Disaster Preparedness, Response, and Recovery, which helps provide coordinated services and resources to all California residences; and
2. Earned Income Tax Credit Employer Notification, which builds on 2015’s statewide California Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) by requiring that employers notify
their employees of possible eligibility for EITC. This helps to increase the number of low-income families who file taxes and receive benefits.
3. November 8th Election Ballot Measure – Proposition 58: United Way of San Diego County Board of Directors voted to approve UWSD’s active support of
Proposition 58: ENGLISH PROFICIENCY. MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION. INITIATIVE STATUTE, which requires that:
Public schools ensure students obtain English language proficiency
Instruction for English acquisition is done rapidly and effectively
School districts authorized to establish dual-language immersion programs for both native and non-native English speakers
Parent/community input solicited in developing language acquisition programs.
