The lifetime cost of being “unbanked” is nearly $4 The lifetime cost of being “unbanked” is nearly $40,000.

154,000* San Diegans lack access to traditional banking services such as savings accounts, credit cards, or fair loans, due to financial constraints, limited proximity to banking institutions, or distrust of the banking system. This means many rely on costly alternatives like payday lenders and check-cashing services. High fees and interest rates only deepen the financial struggle, making it harder to get ahead.

But real change happens when we come together.

At the 2026 Bank On Forum, United Way of San Diego County gathered community organizations, financial institutions, and government partners with one shared goal: expanding access to safe, affordable financial services for all.

Special thanks to our guest speaker and panelists: Jessica Monge Coria (Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco), Croquette Hudson (Cal Coast Credit Union), Pana Hap (Junior Achievement of San Diego County), and Patrick Della (JPMorganChase). And thank you to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco for generously providing food and beverages.

Thank you to the incredible Volunteer Income Tax A Thank you to the incredible Volunteer Income Tax Assistants (VITA) who dedicated their time this season to provide free, high-quality tax preparation for thousands of San Diegans.

Working alongside 48+ community partners in our San Diego County EITC Coalition, these IRS-trained volunteers helped low- and moderate-income individuals file their taxes for free while ensuring they claimed crucial state and federal Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), lessening financial strain for families across our region.

We are grateful for the dedication of our volunteers and partners. Thank you for making a lasting difference!
