If you applied for the Worker Assistance Initiative, please know that we are doing everything we can to process the applications as quickly as possible. Please refer to these FAQs before contacting our team.

What Is Covered Through the Worker Assistance Initiative?2020-03-25T21:41:40+00:00

Rent/mortgage and utilities payments. Payments will be made directly to landlords, mortgage companies, and utility service providers. Utility payments will only cover the following: gas, electric, water, trash, telephone, and internet.

  1. Applicants tell us what bills they have, and who needs to be paid
  2. UWSD reviews application and determines funding decisions based on financial need and family size, using United Ways of California’s Real Cost Measure for San Diego County, as well as the availability of funds
  3. Where applicable, UWSD directly pays landlords, mortgage companies, and utility providers

We understand that your situation is urgent and are doing our best to put response systems and staffing in place to ensure that all inquiries are handled in an expeditious way. Right now, you can expect to receive a decision within 10-15 working days of submitting your application.

Do I Have to Apply Online?2020-03-26T17:19:38+00:00

We strongly encourage you to apply online if at all possible for expediency. If individuals do not have access to the internet, we will accept paper applications. Scan and email the application to help@uwsd.org.

Our staff is working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, applications cannot be accepted in person.

Who Is Eligible?2020-03-25T22:55:14+00:00

Low-wage workers who have experienced job loss or a reduction in pay since March 1, 2020 as a result of COVID-19, and seek assistance with paying their utility bill or rent/mortgage, are eligible to apply.

Funding decisions will be based on financial need and family size, using United Ways of California’s Real Cost Measure for San Diego County, as well as the availability of funds.

What Documents Do I Need to Provide?2020-03-28T00:55:27+00:00

When submitting your application, please have the following ready, depending on the type of assistance you are requesting:

  • Your most recent SDG&E bill
  • Your most recent utility bill
  • Your most current lease agreement/mortgage statement or proof of your most recent rent/mortgage payment
  • Your two most recent paystubs

UWSD requires verification of your most recent employment with submission of your two most recent pay stubs. If you do not have pay stubs available, you may submit other documentation that verifies that you qualify for this assistance. Documents include a severance letter, communication from your employer about reduced hours, application for unemployment, etc.

Upload your most recent pay stub or letter of verification from a nonprofit organization. Your home address on your pay stub must match the address listed on your lease agreement or mortgage statement.

If you were employed and received payment in cash – please state what you did for a living; your rate of pay per hour prior to March 1, 2020; and explain your current employment circumstance (i.e., reduction in wages or job loss) including your current rate of pay per hour. Please be specific.

How Do I Know If My Application Was Received?2020-03-25T21:40:05+00:00

Upon completion of your application, you will receive a message on the application site that states “Thank you for your application to the Worker Assistance Initiative. United Way of San Diego County will review your application and notify you of a decision within ten to fifteen working days.” If you did not receive this message, your application was not received and you should re-submit your answers.

What If I Don’t Have Paystubs?2020-03-27T19:57:40+00:00

If you do not have paystubs, you may submit a letter of verification from a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, indicating that you qualify for this assistance. Please include any additional documentation that illustrates your loss of income and/or need for assistance (ie. unemployment application, severance notification from your human resources department, etc.).

If you were employed and received payment in cash – please state what you did for a living; your rate of pay per hour prior to March 1, 2020; and explain your current employment circumstance (i.e., reduction in wages or job loss) including your current rate of pay per hour. Please be specific.
